三条衣棚の北東角の生垣の中に説明板があります。室町時代以降にこの地に法衣業者が集って棚売を始めたことが町名の由来になっているとのことですした。2022年5月2日再訪説明書きのある植え込みは、ツツジだった様です。綺麗なツツジが咲いている中にある説明板もいいものですね。

三條衣棚室町時代以降、此地に法衣業者が集って棚売りを始めてやがて町名となって現在に及んだ。殊に弘治年間千切屋の祖が此所に店舗を開きしより其の分家別家一門次第に繫栄し此町を中心として近辺に同業を営んだ者百余軒の多きに上ったといふ。三條、四條の地は平安中期以降常に商業経済の中心地であり所謂下右京の中枢に位し加ふるに室町末期にはこの周辺に巨刹の碁布せし事が衣棚を此地に発生せしめた要因と考えられる。天正年間秀吉の市街整備にあたり大寺院の殆どが遠所に移転されたるにもかかはず業者よく結束してその伝統的営業を続け全国的に斯界の独占的地位を保った。中世に発生したる座が権門社寺の保護下に利権を拡大したるに対し衣座は利権擁護の特権の見るべきものなきにかかわらずよく明治初年に及んだことは経済史上産業史蹟として重孝すべきである。京都史蹟會（現地案内版より）Sanjo wardrobeFrom the Muromachi period onwards, ceremonial clothing traders gathered in this area and started selling shelves, which eventually became the name of the town and continues to this day.
