日本刻字協会 (nihon kokuji kyōkai) Japan (Calligraphy) Carving/Engraving Association headquartered in Kanda Sakumacho curates an annual exhibition of artworks by its members at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (in the Citizen's Galleries) in the last week of January. The display occupies multiple galleries and includes hundreds of decorative carvings in wood of calligraphy featuring concepts as well as Chinese classical poems. The 39th exhibition in 2020 included artwork rendered in kanji characters, kana, Korean Hangul, Philippine Tagalog and even some English. In the 2020 show, there were even some English language captions with some of the carvings. The 42nd exhibition in 2024 was all Japanese or Chinese kanji with explanations in Japanese and only including the first five characters of the lengthier objects. The museum permits non-flash photography in the galleries. This has become a must see on my January visits to Tokyo. It is easy to spend hours admiring the many carvings making the exhibit an excellent activity if the weather is inclement (although, January is the sunniest month in Tokyo). As a student of kanji, I am delighted when I can recognize the constituent elements of a carving and am encouraged to research those I cannot understand.
